The Malta Feline Guardians Club will hold its first cat show of the year this month, riding high on the wave of success after the last one attracted over 1,100 people.

Set for January 27 at the Coastline Hotel, Salina, it will closely follow the World Cat Show, which the club is hosting this weekend in Rimini, Italy, in collaboration with the Italian cat club Serenissima and Club Felino from the Canary Islands.

Club president Kevin Micallef said the condition of the cats' fur, as a result of better grooming, had improved tremendously at the last show. The new breed exhibited, the Sphinx, also made a great impact and visitors were astonished by its beauty and grace.

Last year the club exceeded all its expectations and goals for the year - it hosted three local cat shows, four international cat shows, and introduced two new breeds.

The club also introduced two new websites www.maltacatshows.com and www.maltasphynx.com. In February, the club invited Eleonora Rinchari, a professional groomer and breeder from Italy, to come over and teach those interested in the proper technique of grooming.

"All these occasions give us great pleasure but the most satisfying feat for all the committee members is housing unwanted cats. This year we housed over 32 cats," Mr Micallef said.

Anyone wishing to enter their cat in the upcoming show can contact Mary Rose Zammit on 2124 6453 or 7924 6453. The closing date for applying is January 18. One may also enter through the website www.maltacatshows.com by downloading an application form.
