The 38th Malta National Championships, sponsored by EuroSport, is currently in progress at the Cottonera Sports Complex.

The tournament will come to a close with the finals of the singles and men's doubles today at St Martin's College, Swatar.

The final of the women's doubles saw title-holders Joanne Cassar and Catherine Dimech take on Maria Borg and Fiorella Farrugia in a repeat of last year's encounter.

At the semi-final stage, Cassar/Dimech eliminated Marisa Micallef/Jacqueline Abela 21-12, 21-8. Borg/Farrugia had the better of Daniela Galea/Claire O'Berg 21-9 21-9 to proceed to the final.

The defending champions were always in control of the proceedings in the final, leading 11-6 at the interval. Then, they surged further ahead to lead 18-9 before taking the set 21-14.

Cassar/Dimech maintained their momentum in the second set, scoring point after point to increase their lead to 18-7 before finally winning the set 21-11 for a 16th title in their joint sporting career.
