A cashier/clerk at the Education Department this morning admitted defrauding the government of €52,000 in cash.

Bjorn Charles Borg, 32, of Qawra, was granted bail against a deposit of €5,000 and a personal guarantee of €10,000 after he admitted to the fraud and misusing computer software.

Police Inspector Ian Abdilla told the court foreign students used to pay for education services they received in Malta and Mr Borg used to cancel receipts and pocket the money. He had been doing this since 2008.

Lawyers Jose Herrera and Edward Zammit Lewis assisted the accused.
