The police are investigating the theft of €1,050 from the Valletta local council offices.

The incident happened last Monday when a council official left on his lunch break but left the keys to the cashbox in his drawer. The missing money was discovered when the end-of-day report was drawn up.

The issue was discussed last Thursday during a closed meeting where it was unanimously decided that no public statement would be made until the police investigate the case. Council workers meanwhile were asked to give statements to the police.

But according to a statement issued by the council this afternoon councillor Ray Azzopardi leaked the information "at the expense of the investigations".
