More than 20 cars were vandalised in Swieqi over the weekend, with a black line having been sprayed on them, Swieqi Council said today.

Seven cars had mirrors smashed.

The vandalism took place in Triq is-Swieqi, Triq il-Molletta and Triq l-Ilma, all close to  Paceville.

The council called on the government and the police to take action for greater security in the area.

It complained that despite meetings held between the police and the council's Public Order and Security Working Group since April, the issues which were raised were not dealt with by the police.

"The general response from the police has been that the St Julian’s Police Station is under-staffed and thus it has not been possible to reach the expectations of the Council."

The council reiterated its call for Swieqi, which includes Ibrag and Madliena, to have its own police station.
