Carnival took over Valletta this afternoon with the popular defile' winding its way from Floriana down Merchants' Street to Republic Street watched by thousands of people.

As in previous years, Carnival was a splash of colour and a cacophony of music and noise and there were some original costumes - such as a man who dress up as a potted plant (see video above).

This was probably the last Carnival to proceed through Freedom Square, where Parliament House is to be built.

In Freedom Square and in St John Street people were able to admire the engineering - and not just the artistry - which go into the building of the floats, with many of the floats opening up wherever space was available.

A night Carnival was also held yesterday, enabling the float builders to enhance the floats with coloured lights.
