Ramón Oller's Carmen, at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta, yesterday mixed contemporary dance and flamenco with ease. The ballet represented a very particular interpretation of the legendary figure of Carmen, a female icon created by Merimée in his novella and to whom Bizet paid tribute in his opera. All proceeds from the performance, brought over by the Spanish Embassy in Malta, are to be donated to the Malta Community Chest Fund. The show marked the end of the six-month Presidency of the EU Council by Spain.
