A man who was reported missing from a Caritas institution where he was following a court-ordered residential drug rehabilitation programme this afternoon pleaded guilty to theft from an aparthotel in St Julian’s.

Oivend Xuereb, 30, was apprehended by the police in Sliema yesterday. The theft took place on Tuesday evening.

Mr Xuereb pleaded guilty to stealing several items worth almost €1,300, including cash, from a room of an English Language Student living in an aparthotel called The White House in Paceville.

He also pleaded guilty to disobeying police ordered during his arrest at 4.30pm, breaching the peace, escaping from the Caritas facility on May 7 and relapsing.

Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit put off the case to tomorrow when she will deliver judgment after hearing the testimonies of the probation officer and a representative of the parole division.

Police Inspectors Carlos Cordina and Jason Sultana prosecuted while lawyer Christopher Chircop appeared for Mr Xuereb.
