Care Malta Group has opened a unit at Villa Messina, Rabat, focused on the care of residents with problems of Dementia.

The Marigold Unit, as it has been called, is hosting 30 elderly residents. Around 4,500 persons suffer from this disease in the Maltese Islands and medical experts are predicting that their number is set to increase in the years to come.

The unit was inaugurated by outgoiong CareMalta CEO Alex Tranter.

Natalie Briffa Farrugia, CareMalta’s new CEO, said that dementia was a condition that was little understood by the public. Specialised care could help to ensure a better and more secure quality of life for elderly citizens with dementia.

CareMalta is currently providing specialized technical training to all the staff at the Unit leading to certification by Stirling University, an international leader in the dementia field.

The refurbished unit, which was originally opened in 1998, includes a new leisure area for residents, new signage in line with the latest design specifications for dementia care units and the addition of new facilities for the residents and the staff.
