Cardinal Health, a leading American company which produces medical products, is considering an expansion of its Malta factory.

The factory, in Marsa, was visited this morning by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, who praised it for its efficiency and for scooping up six of eight awards given by the mother company to its various subsidiaries earlier this year.

Dr Gonzi said that Cardinal Health was an example of how Malta could be competitive and successful in the manufacturing sector.

The local firm was set up in 1995 and currently employs 110 workers.

One of Cardinal Health Malta's main products is Medi-Vac suction canisters used during surgery, which are mainly exported to European markets.

The Malta factory won awards for Best Plant of the Year; Best Manufacturing Director of the Year; Best Plant Goals Attainment Award; Best Inventory Management award; Best Cost Management Award; and Best Service Level Award.

It was the second time that the Malta operation was given the Best Plant of the Year award by Cardinal Health. The first time was in 2005.

The main export markets are France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, Benelux, the Nordic countries and Turkey. The Malta plant also exports to Saudi Arabia, Australia and New Zealand.
