The stock of licensed motor vehicles rose by 3,666 in the second quarter this year, to stand at 299,474.

The National Statistics Office said that 75.9 percent were private vehicles, while commercial vehicles accounted for 16.1 percent.

New licences issued in the second quarter amounted to 5,140. Private vehicles accounted for 4,155 new licences, or 80.8 percent of the total.

The majority of new licences were issued to private vehicles falling within 'Class 1' (<1300 cc). This class accounted for 1,583 new licences, while vehicles in 'Class 2' (1301-1449 cc) accounted for 643. Newly-licensed 'new' motor vehicles amounted to 1,919, or 37.3 percent of the total, while newly-licensed 'used' motor vehicles amounted to 3,221.

In the same period, exported vehicles amounted to 18. Scrapped vehicles numbered 844 of which 56.5 percent were 'Class 1' vehicles (<1300 cc).

Garaged vehicles - vehicles no longer licensed for use on the road but not those which have been scrapped or exported,amounted to 1,943 or 69.3 percent of the total vehicles which are no longer on the road.
