The number of licences for new motor vehicles jumped in the first quarter of this year as the new registration regime came into force.

Figures issued this morning by the NSO show there were 4,264 new registrations between January and March, compared to 3,276 in the first three months of last year.

The figures show that the stock of licensed motor vehicles rose by 1,150, with just over three quarters of the vehicles on the road being private vehicles.

Newly-licensed 'used' motor vehicles amounted to 2,293.

During the same period, 20 vehicles were scrapped and 3,044 were garaged.
