I have been following the reports, as available on internet pages, with regard to the transition of the car park near St Luke`s Hospital to Pietà local council. It seems to me that some parties concerned are interested in making an issue out of this normal administrative procedure.
I am convinced that the administration of St Luke`s Hospital is primarily in no way duty bound to provide parking space for its employees. If an employer does provide parking facilities for her/his employees this should be regarded as a sign of goodwill and not as the fulfilment of an obligation.
A hospital is definitely no temple of amusement. It is for many persons a sanctuary requiring a maximal degree of serenity and tranquillity.
St Luke`s Hospital is a noisy place with too many cars within it and outside it. The number of cars around St Luke`s Hospital is furthermore detrimental to the environment and therefore detrimental to public health.
I am therefore all the more surprised that nurses and their trade unions as well as Malta`s future medical doctors have raised their voice in a protest that can only be described as ludicrous.
An efficient public transport service should be enough to care for the transport needs of the healthy persons visiting St Luke`s Hospital.
