A 37-year-old car dealer was remanded in custody after he pleaded not guilty to forging stolen cheques to buy close to €10,000 worth of cigarettes, generators, alcohol and tools from different establishments.

Glen Borg, of Tarxien, was also accused of forging a dead man’s signature in August and earlier and of committing a crime during the operative period of a suspended sentence.

Inspector Jonathon Ferris said he police believed that Mr Borg was part of an organised crime ring made of three people. One had already been charged, Mr Borg and another, who investigators believed was the mastermind behind the operation.
