The two girls who were in critical condition following a car accident in Lija on Monday have been released from intensive care and are now recovering in hospital.

Daphne Genovese, 16 and her friend Justine Mercieca, 17 were in a car on Pantar Road with three of their friends when the driver lost control of his Fiat 127.

The car hit a trench on the side of the road causing it to flip and three of the passengers to fly out the boot door, relatives said yesterday.

The two girls suffered serious head injuries placing them in the Intensive Care Unit for four days. They were released from the ITU yesterday.

The driver of the car, a 21-year-old from Għargħur, was tested and was found not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Relatives said that the group had been on the way back from a friend's house when the accident happened. The other three occupants suffered slight injuries.
