The Prime Minister and the Minister of Health visited the Breast Screening Centre this morning and congratulated the staff following figures which showed that half of those women who were invited for screening actually turned up for the test - a figure well above that in other countries.
The centre was set up late last year and currently screens women in their fifties.
Dr Nadine Delicata said the scans were seen by two doctors independently of each other. While a number of women were recalled for a second test, she said that cancer was only confirmed in a small percentage of cases. These women were immediately referred to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment.
