The Malta Cancer Foundation has announced three Kayak challenges to raise funds for a palliative care unit for cancer patients.

Prof Stephen Brincat, chairman of the foundation, said a 59-nautical mile kayak challenge around the Maltese islands will be held this month and will be followed in June with a Pozzallo-Valletta expedition. The biggest challenge will be a 175-mile Tunisia-Malta expedition in June next year.

Hs said the foundation would like to see the new unit up and running at Boffa Hospital this year, eventually transferring it to Mater Dei Hospital with the rest of the Oncology Department. Staff recruitment will start shortly.

Fund-raising events started last year when a Gozo-Sicily Kayak for Cancer challenge raised €29,900.
SMS donations may be made on 50618930 for donations of €6.99 and 50619209 for donations of €11.65.
