Alonso started from pole for the fifth race in a row. 2005 (Kimi Raikkonen, McLaren) Raikkonen won after Alonso's only retirement of the season. Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella led for almost half the race before an hydraulics problem. Alonso led for six laps but hit the wall on the 39th of 70 laps. 2004 (Michael Schumacher, Ferrari) Schumacher became the first driver to win the same race seven times. Ferrari were handed a one-two when Williams' Ralf Schumacher, who had finished second, was disqualified for oversized brake ducts. 2003 (Schumacher, Ferrari) Schumacher, struggling with brake problems, led brother Ralf in a family one-two to regain the championship lead from McLaren's Raikkonen, who started from the pitlane. 2002 (Schumacher, Ferrari) Schumacher celebrated Ferrari's 150th win. Juan Pablo Montoya started on pole and retired after an engine failure while second with 13 laps remaining. The circuit The track is on the Ile de Notre Dame, a man-made island on the St Lawrence seaway that was built for the 1976 EXPO exhibition and has hosted the race since 1978. Because the circuit is infrequently used, it can be very dusty on Friday. The circuit puts a heavy burden on brakes and gearbox, with frequent switches from tight chicanes to long high-speed straights and up to 2,000 gearchanges required over the 70 laps.
