I will be voting in favour of divorce, because it's the only way to allow people whose conscience permits them to exercise a civil right that should be available to them. I should not be having to vote, because legislating on matters that affect minorities should not be a matter left to the whim of the Great Unwashed (and that includes me)

Just to make a point, I shall make a point: this does not mean that I will, in due course, be voting against the Nationalists when it comes to deciding who I trust more to govern the country. Disagreeing, even fundamentally, on a single issue that is not fundamental (for all that the fundamentalists try to make it so) does not signify leaving behind the more important things in life.

So MaltaToday and its like can stop sniping and gloating about how the Government is trembling because of the divorce debate.

So, back to the debate: the pro-divorce movement has got itself hot under the collar about the way the Nationalist Party has routed the (in the sense of road-mapping, not the other sense) debate by predicating the holding of a referendum on a favourable vote in the House.

Why do the pro-divorce movement want the people to decide on something that doesn't concern the people as a whole?

I don't see why.

When you think about it, that's exactly - well, at least partly exactly - what I've been whining about myself. It is our MPs' duty to legislate so now before putting the question to us, the people, they at least have to stand up and be counted, which is less craven than simply passing the buck to us.

It's a pity the Honourables didn't grow a full set while they were at it and made it their sole responsibility to decide on the matter.
