The Labour Party enrolled 14,628 new members and raised €37,017 in a door-to-door campaign launched soon after Joseph Muscat became party leader in 2008.

The campaign, which has now been concluded, saw party volunteers calling on all households in Malta and Gozo.

The campaign was coordinated by Emanuel Cuschieri, who gave an account of the campaign in the party newspaper today.

The biggest boost to the party membership was from the sixth district, where 2,254 people enrolled, well above the second-placed district with 1,719 new members.

Supporters were most generous in the first district, contributing €7,532 to the party, followed by the 13th district at €3,554. Fund-raising was slowest in the fourth district, from where €1,312 were raised.

The PL now has just over 34,000 members.

Dr Muscat has, soon after he became leader, said that he wished to see the party membership doubled before the end of the legislature.
