This week we will feature a letter by Aldo Portelli, who is in favour of reserved parking zones.

'Distinctly and clearly, I disapprove your setting the ball rolling against the introduction of reserved parking zones. Have we joined the EU or not? Have major cities and town centres in Europe introduced these zones? Have we joined a third world union - min jaħtaf, jaħtaf? (whoever grabs, grabs)

'These zones are found all over Europe, and more towns in Malta should have them. I totally disagree with Antoine Ellul and Mario Zammit (The Sunday Times, April 13). I also disagree with Mr Dent (The Sunday Times, April 20), who contradicts himself. He can solve his problem by trying to persuade Msida council to introduce reserved parking zones where and as required.

It is not fair when he says that he is one of the 'less privileged road tax payers ...' He has all the right to persuade his neighbours to put pressure on the local council for the introduction of these reserved parking zones, just like his neighbouring Ta' Xbiex council.

'Without a reserved parking zone, the elderly are trapped within the home. Leaving their parking space, on their return home, they will not be able to park due to people employed in the area.

'We must educate ourselves and introduce these zones wherever they will be of benefit to residents, and I presume these gentlemen are residents somewhere.' (Aldo Portelli, Sliema)

Rather than looking at the issue from a generic angle, Mr Portelli adopts a blinkered approach. Evidently, he is only interested in his point of view. Moreover, he patronisingly concludes his argument by telling Mr Zammit, Mr Ellul, Mr Dent, and myself to educate ourselves.

At this stage I invite these gentlemen to send me their comments in response to Mr Portelli's comments.
