British Prime Minister David Cameron said this afternoon that he was personally thanking Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi for Malta's assistance for the evacuation of workers from Libya.

In a statement to the House of Commons on the Libya crisis, he said he also wanted to pay tribute to the people of Malta, "not for the first time".

Mr Cameron spoke on the action taken by Britain to evacuate its nationals and those of many other countries. He also listed actions being taken by the UN, the EU and Britain itself against the Gaddafi regime.

He also said that Britain was working with its allies on a possible military no-fly zone over Libya.

Dr Gonzi said yesterday that he had a phone conversation with Mr Cameron on Thursday when they discussed humanitarian missions to Libya.

Since then, British Hercules aircraft have carried out two rescue missions deep in the Libyan desert, rescuing some 300 workers, including three Maltese.

The frigate Cumberland also made two evacuation trips from Benghazi, bringing 450 workers, including a Maltese.
