The Highway Code, section 272 - Speed Limits - is very clear. It gives two main columns (built-up areas and other places) and four categories of vehicles. The highest limits are 50kmh and 80kmh respectively. I would, therefore, be grateful if ADT were to clarify certain aspects.

First of all, is the Highway Code the bible for the road? Secondly, if 80kmh is the limit on open highways (the few that exist in Malta), why is it that many have a lower limit of 70kmh? Thirdly, the limits as denoted on the road do not make any differentiation between the classes of vehicles. Thus, buses have a maximum limit of 60kmh and goods vehicles are restricted to 40kmh.

It is very common to see these two types being driven very much in excess of these limits and the speed cameras do not seem to be able to distinguish between one type of car and another. I appreciate that in built-up areas there could be different parameters but I have never seen any limitation regarding heavy vehicles.

Finally, speed cameras. It is declared that these are calibrated on a regular basis. But, at the same time, when vehicles have their VRT, are they checked to ensure that their speedometer is working properly? Again, how is it possible to keep your eyes on the road and at the same time on the speedometer when nearly all these are graduated in 5kmh intervals?

I am not aware of digital speedometers and, even so, in strong sunlight, it is difficult to read the LED displays.

Therefore, while I appreciate the need for control and prudence, all regulations must present a level ground that does not seem to be the case as explained above.
