The eagerly awaited Joseph Calleja, Dionne Warwick and Riccardo Cocciante concert has been rescheduled to Thursday, after strong winds forced last night's postponement at the Granaries in Floriana.

Concert organisers NNG Promotions apologised for the inconvenience, emphasising that the performance had to be postponed to ensure that the thousands of guests attending the event would enjoy the best possible performance from all the artists and orchestra.

A spokesman for NNG said: "If this was a rock concert, it would have gone ahead. But it was impossible to do a concert of this nature with 100 microphones open on stage. The slightest wind is a problem.

"Joseph Calleja is very disappointed that the performance did not go ahead on the planned date, but he is more determined than ever to ensure he treats the audience to a great performance on Thursday evening."

The spokesman said the decision to postpone last night's concert was taken after NNG consulted with the Met. Office as well as the company's architects, structural engineer and security men. Everybody agreed that in the light of the forecast wind the concert should not take place.

NNG stopped selling tickets for the concert at midday on Friday as soon as weathermen started to forecast a force 7 north-westerly wind for Saturday night.

The organisers also dismantled sections of the stage to avoid damage, including a giant 10-metre LED screen. These will be reassembled before Thursday's performance.

The spokesman said the concert could not take place before Thursday since high winds are also forecast for today and Dionne Warwick has an engagement in Cyprus to fulfil before returning to Malta later this week.

The concert will be held at the same venue on Thursday at 8.30 p.m.

All tickets that were purchased for the concert due to take place last night are valid for Thursday's concert and a limited number of tickets are still available for sale for the new date.
