The group that campaigns against construction in outside development zones has called for clear conditions for the hotel and spa to be developed at the former military barracks outside Mosta.

Front Ħarsien ODZ also urged the authorities to ensure there is full transparency and consultation over the proposed development in the area known as Bużbeżija.

The Times of Malta last Monday revealed plans to develop a 30-room hotel and spa on the land formerly earmarked for a controversial shooting range to be built by Russian investors. The government dropped these plans following public outrage.

“Since this is public land being handed to the private sector we demand full transparency over the plans and consultation involving local communities and the general public,” the front said.

Developers should not hide behind describing a hotel as a retreat house but should present their full plans

“Developers should not hide behind rhetorical discourse like describing a hotel as a retreat house but should present their full plans.”

Following the decision not to proceed with the shooting range, negotiations are under way between the government and the Bużbeżija Group to develop the barracks into a small hotel including a spa and a restaurant.

The development is being proposed by the GP Borg Construction Group after their proposal placed second in a request for proposals.

No development application has yet been presented to Mepa.
