Malta’s Bicycling Advocacy Group launched a call for common sense in cycle path design following the placement of various street furniture and signage in share cycle paths along the road to the ferry port in Cirkewwa.

In a statement this morning the group said that Maltese cyclists have been posting photographs online of signage and traffic lights in the middle of cycle paths in Malta and saying how stupid these mistakes were.

Although the group was advised that the contractor responsible would be correcting these errors, it was keen to point out that Transport Malta’s original concept for shared cycle paths in rural locations, that was also limited to six kilometres per hour, was somewhat faulted.

‘Such low speed shared cycle paths are best suited to urban settings rather than the greater distances of rural areas. With a speed limitation of walking speed that’s really a no brainer. They are simply in the wrong place,” group PRO James Wightman said.
