Europeans had to take immediate action to help out Africa so that people there could live in dignity, Speaker Anġlu Farrugia said yesterday.

He was addressing an 80-strong contingent from Gozo’s San Lawrenz, Treviso’s Colle Umberto and France’s La Balme de Sillangy.

They were visiting the new Parliament building while working together on an EU-funded project about the role of Europe in the Mediterranean.

Dr Farrugia referred to the critical migration situation that was turning the Mediterranean Sea into a cemetery. He called for the cooperation of all European states in a bid to come up with a solution that would allow Africans the same dignity enjoyed by European citizens.

The development of Africa would not only benefit the Africans themselves but also ease the challenges that Europe was facing, he noted.
