Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela discussed change that needs to be done in Paceville with St Julian’s local council and the National Youth Council.

The local council underlined the need for better law enforcement and reiterated its calls for a police station (fixed or mobile).

It highlighted problems of lawlessness, noise and inadequate health and safety measures, and their impact on residents.

The Youth Council suggested educational campaigns for young people and parents and also called for alternative entertainment for young people.

Mr Abela said change in Paceville would require a collective effort but the government was determined to move the process forward.

He said new regulations to beef up law enforcement and increase penalties were expected before Cabinet in the coming days.

He said police presence had been increased. Deployment of policemen should be on rotation basis, he said. There was also need to ensure that bouncers were not only licensed, but also trained.

The meeting was part of a consultation process launched by the government in the wake of the November 15 incident at a Paceville club where scores were injured.
