Opposition leader Simon Busuttil said this morning that the government’s decision to appeal Friday’s Constitutional court sentence was ‘an insult to democracy, an insult to the people, and an insult to the voters of the eighth and the 13th districts’.

Dr Busuttil was referring to the court decision awarding an additional two seats in parliament to the Nationalist Party after finding that mistakes were made in the vote-counting process in 2013.

Dr Busuttil said in a Radio 101 interview that the government should be setting the example by accepting the court sentence.

It had dragged its feet during the court case and the opposition thus had two fewer seats than it should have. Two years out of the five-year term had passed, and yet the governemnt wanted to drag its feet further.

This was an insult and he was renewing his appeal for the government not to go ahead with its appeal, Dr Busuttil said. Should it appeal, it would show the people of the eighth and 13th districts, where the counting mistakes were made, that their vote did not count.

Dr Busuttil also referred to the debate on fuel prices due to be held in Parliament tomorrow. He said the Opposition would continue to insist that fuel prices have to go down more, immediately, in line with international oil prices.

The recent 4c cut in prices was 'ridiculous' Dr Busuttil said. The people should not be deceived and robbed any more by the government.
