Business owners are losing their driving licences because of contraventions committed by third parties using vehicles registered in their names, the GRTU Malta Chamber of SMEs said.

It said in a statement on Wednesday that while it had always agreed with the principles behind the penalty point system, the way this was being implemented had turned into yet another piece of blinkered legislation that placed a disproportionate burden on business owners.

For business owners who had a considerable amount of company vehicles registered under their name were being held liable for breaches they did not commit and were receiving driving license revocation letters for contraventions incurred by third parties.

They had been placed in a position where they had to prove their innocence, it said.
The GRTU said that although minister had publicly guaranteed that penalty points would only be incurred when a vehicle was stopped, with speed cameras being the only exception being, this was not entirely the case.

The chamber said it will be meeting Transport Malta and and Lesa officials this week in a final attempt to iron out issues in an amicable manner.
