President George Abela’s state visit in Romania in October will be accompanied by a Maltese business delegation, organised by the Foreign Affairs Ministry and Malta Enterprise.

Foreign Affairs Minister Tonio Borg will be joining the commercial delegation, the sixth of its kind in this legislature.

In the past few months business delegations were organised to Portugal, Ukraine, Poland, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Maltese businesses are being requested to apply to form part of this delegation. One-to-one meetings with Romanian businesses are currently being organised.

The most targeted industry sectors are renewable energy, environmental services, transport and logistics, education and training, tourism and ICT.

During this legislature, the government has signed, ratified or entered into force 23 agreements that facilitate direct foreign investment.

These agreements consist of 18 on the removal of double taxation, three on the protection and promotion of investments and two on visa removal. These agreements form part of 99 reached.

Agreements on double taxation were signed with Bahrain, Belgium, Georgia, Germany, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Jersey, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Montenegro, Qatar, San Marino, Serbia, Singapore, Switzerland and the United States.

Agreements on the protection and promotion of investment were signed with China, Montenegro and Serbia. Visa requirement was removed with Qatar and the United States.

Dr Borg said his ministry would continue to increase its international capacity in the diplomatic field whilst continuing to promote investment and increase foreign contacts. This would continue to attract foreign investment to Malta.

Foreign investment in Malta would continue to achieve records in investment contacts and interests made to the Maltese embassies. The ministry and Malta Enterprise followed up around 1,000 new business contacts made through the Maltese embassies and consulates.
