The number of applications for the new tallinja bus card reached 21,000,

Launched last Sunday, the card will from July allow commuters to benefit from reduced fares.

While, under the current system, a day ticket is capped at €1.50 there will be no day capping with the new system but a monthly capping of €26.

Commuters will be asked to collect their cards from local councils as from June, Daniel Grech, commercial director, said.

Officials of Malta Public Transport said there will be no distinction in fares for local and foreigners.

One can register for the bus card in Sliema, Valletta, Bugibba, the airport, Mater Dei, Mgarr Gozo and the university.

When asked why buses were sill in a number of different colours, reporters were told the buses would be in standard green and white livery by the end of summer.

No comment was given on possible strike action on Saturday, with Malta Public Transport representatives insisting that talks with the GWU were ongoing.
