The rate of student mobility remains low because of unnecessary bureaucracy and uncertainty brought about by the recognition procedure of grades across different countries, a geography graduate said yesterday.

According to the European Commission, 20 per cent of students would have an overseas studying experience by 2020 but Malta remained behind, Andrea Pace said during his graduation speech.

The suspension of EU education programmes, including Erasmus, earlier this year had not helped even though an ad hoc agreement had now been reached, he said, adding it was time to look ahead.

Speaking about arts subjects, Mr Pace said: “The Faculty of Arts gives us many skills but not a career. This instils fear for the future in some students as they prepare to enter the working world.”

Many questioned the relevance of the arts in a world where everything was measured against productivity and whether it turned the economic wheel, he said. But the range of subjects taught through the arts contributed towards the holistic study of man on various levels including sociology, anthropology, philosophy and language.

Studying the arts remained relevant because no other subject tackled the depth and social environment of mankind in such a holistic way, he said.

Laura Holmberg, a graduate in psychology and geography, praised the free education system in Malta.

She pointed out that, at times, students had to face “perceived inefficiencies” like not being notified about the cancellation of lectures. However, she added, “The seeming inefficiency is a lack of rigidity in the system... While I’m not saying I do not see opportunity for improvement, I’d just like to point out that, in the absence of a perfect organisation, I have found flexibility that I value and I hope will not be lost with any improvements achieved in the future.”
