Individualism generated by a capitalist culture has led to the spread of anonymity, the growth of indifference and the increase in the number of those who feel lonely in the crowd, Gozo Bishop Mario Grech has said in a pastoral letter written to celebrate the feast of the Assumption.

Mgr Grech wrote:

“This indifference towards the suffering man is not only a personal sin but a lalcuna of the establishment, as institutions within a democratic society fail to line up to their duty! Unfortunately, besides individuals, nations too have assumed this attitude of indifference towards their neighbour!”

He said in his letter that the solution to all these ills was solidarity - social solidarity, solidarity in education, with families, environmental solidarity and God’s solidarity with man.
