A Bulgarian was this morning jailed for 12 years and fined €30,000 after he pleaded guilty to drug importation.

Eshref Eshref, 28, had been meant to stand trial by jury but he decided to admit guilt.

He had arrived in Malta in May 2009 on a flight from Brussels and was stopped by the Drug Squad and Customs officers who were tipped off about his arrival.

Mr Eshref had been found carrying 116 capsules - 92 cocaine and 24 heroin, in the false compartment of his luggage.
