A Bulgarian man who illegally worked as a bouncer today received a six-month suspended jail term after pleading guilty to seriously injuring a tourist who he had seen urinating in Paceville.

Stanislav Stoyanov, 23, who resides in St Julians, pleaded guilty to seriously injuring Matteo Boldrin at around 4am on August 12.

The court heard how the bouncer had gone to stop Mr Boldrin and his friend who he saw urinating across the street. A scuffle broke out and Mr Boldrin sustained serious injuries to his face.

Before Magistrate Gabriella Vella, Mr Stoyanov pleaded guilty to grievously injuring Mr Boldrin and breaching the peace. He was sentenced to six months in jail suspended for two years.

He was fined a further €500 after pleading guilty to working as a bouncer without a licence issued by the Police Commissioner.

The incident is the same one that led to the arrest of the chief executive officer of a financial services company last week. The arrest was later deemed illegal by a magistrate who ordered his immediate release.

Irishman Justin Caffrey, 40, had been arrested and charged with assaulting and resisting police officers and interfering in their investigations.

Mr Caffrey’s defence lawyers, Giannella de Marco and George Hyzler, told the court during his arraignment that their client sought help from a group of police officers, who looked at him and walked away, only telling him that an ambulance was on its way.

They said Mr Caffrey was holding the young man in his arms and had his shirt covered in his blood. The youth was taken to hospital but Mr Caffrey could not understand how the police officers “walked away from their duty”, the lawyers said.

Shocked at the officers’ “inaction”, their client tapped them on the shoulder to do something about the incident and was told to mind his own business. To this, the Irishman called the police “fu***** bastards” and that was when he was pinned to the ground and arrested.
