Former hard-man defender Trifon Ivanov, who was instrumental in helping Bulgaria reach the 1994 World Cup semi-finals, died today, aged 50.

The former footballer suffered a heart attack.

The centre-back's playing career included spells at CSKA Sofia, Real Betis and Rapid Vienna.

"Trifon Ivanov will remain in the history of Bulgarian football as one of the best defenders," a Bulgarian Football Union statement said.
