Plans for an amnesty on long-standing building violations have prompted mixed reactions, with developers and architects welcoming it but environmentalists warning it could encourage further abuse.

Under the proposed scheme, revealed by The Sunday Times of Malta, applications for sanctioning would be subject to a one-time fee set higher than the existing charges, although they would still have to be evaluated by a board.

The amnesty would apply to infringements committed before 2013 and those outside development zones up to 1994, the year the planning authority was created.

The government, through the scheme, is aiming to wipe out a substantial chunk of the 10,000 pending enforcement cases.
