The Budget for 2018 was approved by the House of Representatives this evening.

After three hours of voting on the various Estimates, totalling €3.58 billion, the Budget was approved with 36 votes in favour and 30 against. The House also approved over €200 million in supplementary expenditure for the year 2017.

All Government MPs voted in favour and all Nationalist Party MPs voted against every vote, but in committee of supply, Democratic Party MPs Marlene and Godfrey Farrugia voted in favour of the Budget allocations for the European Affairs and Equality Ministry, the Education and Employment Ministry, and the Ministry for the Family, the Rights of Children, and Social Solidarity. In each of these cases, the PD MPs also voted against the Opposition’s customary amendment, a motion to reduce the ministerial emolument for the coming year by €3, intended to demonstrate a lack of confidence in the respective minister.

The Budget was presented on October 9 and subsequently approved by the European Commission.
