Underground trains, trams and buses throughout Brussels were at a standstill for a fourth day today as workers extended a strike after a supervisor was beaten to death on Saturday.

Despite hopes that services would resume after the extended Easter weekend, the Brussels transport company was forced to announce early today that "not a single metro, tram or bus is going".

The Belgian government had promised new measures to improve security on Brussels' transport routes but unions are still assessing their potential impact.

Early on Saturday, a supervisor called to the site of an accident involving a bus was beaten up. He died later in hospital.

Over the past few years, workers for public transport companies have increasingly complained about passenger aggression and violence.
