Two British men from Newcastle were fined a total of €6,430 for failing to declare cigarettes and tobacco on their arrival in Malta from Dubai on Sunday.

Matthew Palmer Stewart, 34, admitted to importing 44 packets of Al Fakher tobacco and 400 Marlboro Lights cigarettes while Gary Jones, 29, admitted to importing 24 packets of Al Fakher.

Mr Stewart was fined €4,004 - €1,500 of which is payable to Customs while Mr Jones was fined €2,426 - €809 of which is payable to Customs.

All tobacco and cigarettes were confiscated and the two men were given a one month jail term, suspended for a year.
