Spain may be World Cup champions but the country's hotels were shown the red card by UK holidaymakers, according to a poll.
Spain gives travellers the worst hotel experience, the survey of 2,000 UK adults by online travel agent ebookers.com found. The next-worst hotel experience is found in France, followed by Greece, with US hotels considered the best.
The survey showed: 48 per cent of British travellers say lack of cleanliness is their greatest bugbear when staying at a hotel; Comfort of the bed, hotel location and helpfulness of staff are among the most important factors for ensuring an enjoyable hotel stay; 29 per cent get hotel reviews from other travellers before making a booking; and when choosing a hotel, men are most driven by ensuring their stay is affordable, with 27 per cent claiming that the price of a hotel room is the prime decider for them when booking.
The poll comes as ebookers launches a nationwide search to find a "hotel inspector" who will review hotels in 10 destinations around the world.
