A British student died after she was hit by a bus on the holiday island of Corsica.

Sophie Fletcher-Curran, 19, was working for holiday firm Mark Warner during a year-long placement from university.

She died yesterday evening in the coastal town of Bastia.

Mark Warner managing director David Hopkins said: "Everyone at Mark Warner is extremely upset by the tragic loss in a road traffic accident of Sophie Fletcher-Curran yesterday in Corsica and we extend our deepest condolences to her family and friends.

"Sophie was a valued member of our team in Corsica and was working for Mark Warner during her hospitality placement year from university."

It is understood members of Miss Fletcher-Curran's family are travelling to Corsica from their home in Northwich, Cheshire.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We can confirm the death in Bastia of a British national.

"Next of kin have been informed. We are providing consular assistance."

According to the news website Corsematin.com, Miss Fletcher-Curran was struck by a bus at 4 p.m. yesterday as she crossed the route nationale 198 at the exit south of Moriani-Plage.

It said she needed to cross the road to get from the chalet where she was staying to the San Luccianu hotel, where she worked.

The website said she was taken to hospital by helicopter but died from her injuries.

Writing on the social networking site Bebo last year, Miss Fletcher-Curran said she was looking forward to university and spoke of her love for her sisters and younger brother.

She also said she was happiest when partying and enjoyed RnB music.
