Michael Mifsud's next destination in English football is likely to be Championship contenders Bristol City.

Yesterday, various newspapers and internet sites in the UK reported that the Malta international was close to leaving Coventry City and joining the Robins after putting in a transfer request.

The Bristol City FC website said the club had an undisclosed offer accepted by Coventry after manager Chris Coleman admitted he was prepared to listen to offers for the club's top scorer.

Norwich City were also interested in Mifsud but yesterday they drew out of the race after reaching an agreement to sign Italian Arturo Lupoli from Serie A's Fiorentina.

Under the heading 'Mifsud looks Bristol bound', the Norwich Evening News said Norwich City's chances of landing the Coventry striker faded fast after Bristol City had a bid accepted for Mifsud.

No indication has been given of the amount of the bid, the Norwich Evening News said. But, the article added, it is thought Coventry are looking to secure at least £1.5m for their player.

Coventry chairman Ray Ranson told the newspaper that rivals Bristol City have met the Sky Blues' asking price for Mifsud, who will now open talks with the Robins.

"Michael has indicated to the manager that he is not happy at the club and is in the process of handing in a written transfer request, so we have to accept that he will move on," Ranson was quoted as saying.

"Bristol City have come in with an offer that we believe is acceptable for a striker who scored 17 goals last season and we have given them permission to speak to Michael and his representatives."

BBC Sport reported that Mifsud, who still has one year left on his contract at the Ricoh Arena, will speak with Bristol City manager Gary Johnson.

Bristol City, BBC Sport said, are looking to re-unite Mifsud, 27, with former Coventry strike partner Dele Adebola. The Maltese striker played superbly in the first half of the season, during which he scored most of his goals, but faltered badly when Adebola left the club in the January transfer window.

Last season, Bristol City just missed out on promotion to the Premier League after losing the play-off final against Hull City 1-0.

Bristol City were in the leading positions in the Championship standings for most of the season but lost pace in the straight for home and were pipped to the two automatic promotion berths by West Brom and Stoke City.
