This year's Robbie Scerri Tournament, sponsored by Kellogg's, came to a close recently with Ray Briffa's team staving off a strong challenge from that of Ian Wirth to claim the title.

The tournament, which started on November 8, was played at the Marsa Sports Club and spread over three weekends.

In all, 12 teams took part. Each side was composed of seven male and seven female players. The captains were: Maria Ancilleri, Michelle Borg Nicolas, Chris Briffa, Ray Briffa, Karen Calleja, Gabriel Cassar Torreggiani, Mario Cutajar, Gino Debono, Edith Hili, Elvira Petroni, Graziella Radmilli and Ian Wirth.

The tournament, first played in 1988, was established in memory of Robbie Scerri, a popular tennis enthusiast at the Marsa Sports Club.

At first, the competition used to attract eight teams of eight players each. But as the tournament gained popularity, the number of participants increased considerably. This year, there was 168 players.

During the presentation of prizes, Godwin Borg, MSC Tennis Section chairman, said the tournament was another huge success.

He thanked all captains and players for their commitment and Charles Darmanin, of Kellogg's, for supporting the event yet again. Present for the occasion were Michael Scerri and Anna Schembri, Robbie Scerri relatives, and Jojo Spiteri, of Kellogg's.
