Gold Cup: The United States will face Honduras in the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup after both sides narrowly got through from the last eight on Saturday. The US, the defending champions, had to fight back from a goal down to win 2-1 courtesy of an extra-time penalty from substitute Kenny Cooper. A controversial penalty earlier gave Honduras a 1-0 victory over Canada. The US and Honduras will meet in Chicago on Thursday along with the winners of last night's other quarter-finals - Mexico against Haiti and Guadeloupe versus Costa Rica.

Bosingwa: Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has conceded defeat in the club's pursuit of Chelsea right-back Jose Bosingwa. Despite talks reaching an advanced stage earlier this month, the Bundesliga side have terminated their interest and will turn their attentions elsewhere after failing to come to an agreement with Chelsea.

Genoa: Genoa thrashed Austrian side Val Stubai 17-0 in their first pre-season friendly yesterday. Sergio Floccari and Hernan Crespo scored hat-tricks while Omar Milanetto, Giuseppe Sculli and Giandomenico Mesto netted two each. Also yesterday, the Serie A club ruled out a bid for out-of-contract veteran Christian Panucci. "Mauro Esposito, Marco Biagianti and Panucci will not be wearing the Genoa shirt this season," Fabrizio Preziosi, the son of Genoa president Enrico, said.

Freak injury: Dutch winger Arjen Robben picked up a freak injury during Real Madrid's pre-season tour of Ireland which could rule him out of the remanining friendlies, reports said yesterday. Robben collided with Dutch compatriot Royston Drenthe during a bounce match and suffered a leg knock, although the extent of the damage is not thought to be particularly serious.

Zamora: Hull City have confirmed that a bid of £5 million for Bobby Zamora has been accepted by Fulham, according to Sky Sports. The Tigers had reportedly had a bid accepted last week but this was unconfirmed. Now the club are set to begin talks with the player himself.

Tennis: Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick has delayed his return to tennis for the second time in three weeks, pulling out as top seed at the Indianapolis Championships which began last night. Roddick's coach Larry Stefanki telephoned tournament officials with the bad news that the 26-year-old was still suffering from the hip flexor injury which bothered him during the grass season.

Hockey: Luciana Aymar converted the game-winning penalty stroke to help Argentina retain hockey's Champions Trophy after a 4-3 victory in a penalty shoot-out over Australia yesterday. The two sides finished 0-0 after regulation and extra-time before Fiona Boyce and Nicole Arrold missed their shots for the home side in the shoot-out. The Netherlands, the Olympic champions, won the bronze medal after beating Germany 5-2.

Shooting: Darren Xuereb won The Profs Maemple Trap Trophy at the Bidnija ranges yesterday. Xuereb claimed top spot with a total of 66 points. Charles Grech was second on 65 points and Kurt Cardona third on 61. James Galea (60), Joe Cutajar (59) and Jeffrey Pisani (57) were the other shooters who contested the final barrage.
