Wendel: Girondins Bordeaux midfielder Wendel will miss the rest of the season after injuring his right knee. The Brazilian, 27, suffered the injury during his side's 4-0 win over Vannes in the French League Cup final on Saturday.

In Bosnia: Fifteen people were arrested in the southern Bosnian city of Mostar after a group of hooligans attacked a bus carrying fans from another city. On Sunday evening a group of around 50 hooligans blocked the bus, which was carrying Sloboda fans home from a match in Tuzla, and pelted it with stones.

Villarreal: Villarreal announced yesterday they had secured the services of promising Ecuadorian midfielder Jefferson Montero on a five year deal. "He is one of the big hopes of Ecuadorean football," claimed the Spanish side who are coached by Chiliean Manuel Pellegrini.

Basketball, NBA: The Cleveland Cavaliers completed their expected sweep of an overmatched Detroit Pistons in Sunday's NBA play-off action, while a determined Chicago Bulls continued to take the fight to the Boston Celtics. LeBron James scored 36 points to spark the Cavaliers to a 99-78 win over the Pistons, the top seeds easing into the Eastern Conference semi-finals with four straight victories in their best-of-seven series. Seventh-seeded Chicago eked out a gritty win in double overtime, defeating defending NBA champions Boston 121-118 to knot their series at 2-2.

Rugby Union: Ireland's first grand slam winning captain Karl Mullen has died aged 82, the Irish Rugby Football Union said on its website yesterday. Mullen, who won 25 caps at hooker, led Ireland to the 1948 grand slam - a feat they only matched again last month - as well as a second Triple Crown in 1949. He also captained the British & Irish Lions tour to New Zealand and Australia a year later.
