Maradona: Argentine soccer great Diego Maradona checked out of a psychiatric clinic but will continue alcohol abuse treatment at home, his doctor said yesterday. Maradona will continue going to the clinic three times a week for follow-up treatment, Dr. Alfredo Cahe told Reuters.

Asia tour: Manchester United are being disrespectful to Asian soccer by organising a tour of the continent that clashes with July's Asian Cup, the region's top official said. The English champions' plans to play in Malaysia on July 27, just two days before the Asian Cup final in Jakarta, show no solidarity to Asian soccer organisers, Asian Football Confederation president Mohamed Bin Hammam said.

Shevchenko: Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko is to have a hernia operation on Tuesday and will miss the FA Cup final against Manchester United later this month. Surgery had originally been scheduled for the end of the season but Chelsea's medical department have decided to bring it forward, the club said.

Santos: Santos won the Paulista championship for the second year running on Sunday, beating Sao Caetano 2-0 in the second leg of the final as they overturned a two-goal deficit from the first match. Vanderlei Luxemburgo's team won by having the better overall record after the tie ended 2-2 on aggregate.

Owusu Abeyie: Former Netherlands youth international Quincy Owusu Abeyie has formally applied to FIFA to be allowed to play for Ghana. The Spartak Moscow striker was born in the Netherlands but has dual nationality. Owusu Abeyie has been approached by Ghana to bolster their squad as they prepare for next year's hosting of the African Nations Cup.

Gomes: Benfica striker Nuno Gomes will miss the rest of the season after undergoing groin surgery, the club said on their website.
