A man was arrested following a car chase sparked by reports that he was breaking into cars in Vittoriosa.

Police said they were alerted at 12.45am that a man had been spotted breaking into vehicles at the Fuq Fortini car park. As soon as he realised he had been spotted, the thief fled the scene in what was later established to be a stolen car.

Police from the Cospicua station soon spotted him but upon realising he was about to be cornered, the thief drove off at speed and in a dangerous manner, the police said through a statement.

The Rapid Intervention Unit was called to assist and the suspect was finally intercepted in Marsa. A search through his vehicle yielded items related to drugs, tools, as well as a knife.

 

The 38-year-old suspect was taken to Police Headquarters the questioning was cut short because he had to be taken to the Floriana Health Centre after he claimed he was in pain.

Police are investigating.
