Maureen Borg is the winner of this year's Nokia Championship, a competition for women at the Royal Malta Golf Club.

Borg, who won the championship 12 times before, was facing the challenge of Manuela Roth, another former champion who returned from Scotland to take part in the competition.

Roth started rather well, achieving the first nine holes in 38 shots whereas Borg had 39. However, that was the only time that Borg was threatened in the championship.

After Day One the scores read: Borg 79; Roth 87; Margaret Nelson 88; Felicity Dix 89. The scores for Day Two saw Borg with 83 and a total of 162. Roth had 82 (169) and Dix 87 (176).

Chris Briffa, the CEO of Intercomp and Nokia, presented the handsome prizes.

Meanwhile, Beverley Hall, the current Lady Captain, won the Moya Hann trophy which is run in parallel with the Nokia Championship. The competition is open for those golfers with a handicap in excess of 23.

The Wedgwood competition is one of the top four of the men's calendar at the club. The format is full handicap (maximum 18), a Stableford competition the first day and Medal the second day.

After Day One, Ray Mountford, with 38 Stableford points, was the leader, followed by Peter Cuthbert (37) and Ian Restall (36).

There was a substantial wind on Day One and the same conditions prevailed on the final day.

On Day Two, Geoff Pickles came in first with a Medal Round of 66. He was followed by Truman Addison (66) and David Saunders (67).

The aggregate of the two days had Pickles in the lead with 14-year-old Addison in second place, following a count-back, and Mountford third. It was the second time that Truman had finished second on a count-back in a major competition, the other occasion being the Barclay Handicap.

The RMGC season closes in June. In July, a new Captain is chosen and the new season starts in September.
